In the last few years, the job market for lawyers has been cooling down, with law schools turning out far more lawyers than are necessary. What hasn’t cooled down, though, is the demand for paralegals and legal assistants — the professionals who do the real behind-the-scenes work of a law firm, like taking depositions, preparing documents, researching precedent, and more. Those people are still in high demand. That’s why many working adults are choosing a career change with an online paralegal degree. At the same time, many working paralegals who started their career with an associate’s degree are choosing to move forward with a bachelor’s in legal studies to earn higher pay and more advancement opportunity.
For both of these prospective students, a Bachelor’s in Legal Studies online program is the way to go. Online programs allow busy working professionals the chance to improve their credentials and learn new skills while continuing their current jobs. With advances in technology, online programs can be as immersive, collaborative, and enriching as traditional on-campus programs — students just need to know where to look for the best choices.

Can You Get a Paralegal Degree Online?
The legal sector is rapidly growing and highly-paid, so many people are looking to get their foot in the door by becoming paralegals. Many prospective paralegals are moving into the legal field from other professions, looking for a higher-paying job with more career potential. However, these people are usually already working full-time, so it is difficult for them to attend a traditional program.
Thankfully there are many high-quality paralegal degree programs available online. There are also many paralegal programs available in a hybrid format. This means that some classes are online and some classes are face-to-face. And thanks to this flexibility, an online program may allow a working professional to complete their degree more quickly. Depending on which school students choose they may even be able to save money on tuition as compared to a traditional college. It is now easier to get a paralegal degree online from a high-quality university than it has ever been in the past. The answer to the question can you get a paralegal degree online is a resounding yes.
Will Employers Trust an Online Paralegal Bachelor’s Degree?
In years gone by, employers tended to look down on degrees from online colleges. However, this is no longer the case. In the early years of online education, most of the schools that offer online degrees or unaccredited and set up only for online students. Today, there are quite a few accredited online universities. Even most traditional universities, including small but prestigious institutions, offer programs available completely online. This phenomenon has raised the prestige of an online degree considerably.
Of course, employers would not even necessarily know that you obtained your degree online. Schools that offer online degrees usually issue diplomas that don’t say anything about the online format — they will look exactly the same as the diploma of students who attended classes in a traditional format.
Even If an employer doesn’t know that you’ve completed your degree online, they will not look down that as long as is it is accredited. There are two main types of accreditation for paralegal programs. The first is the regional accreditation for the institution. Regional accreditation is for the institution as a whole and includes all of the school’s programs. A degree in any field is worth much more if it is from a regionally accredited institution. In fact, if it is not from regionally accredited institution many employers will not even accept it.
Secondly, there is accreditation specifically for the program. The American Bar Association offers an official approval for paralegal programs, though not an accreditation. However, the ABA does not officially approve any online programs. Even if they don’t, that does not mean that employers will not accept the degree. It simply means that the degree is not quite as prestigious.
Does the American Bar Association Approve Online Paralegal Programs?
As previously mentioned, the main accreditation offer to programs is from the American Bar Association. The best-known legal organization, the ABA only offers accreditation to law schools. Law schools refer to schools that offer the JD degree that enables graduate’s to take the bar exam and become licensed attorneys. Its paralegal program is technically not part of the law school. Therefore, it cannot be accredited. However, schools that have ABA-accredited law schools are generally held in high regard by employers in the legal field. This is true even though the paralegal programs are not specifically accredited by the APA.
A paralegal program at a school with an accredited law school generally can benefit from a higher quality of professors and perhaps even a higher quality of curriculum. However, it is not one hundred percent necessary to get a paralegal degree from a school that also has an ABA-accredited law school. Many successful paralegals received their degrees from institutions that do not have an accredited law school. It simply helps the prestige of a paralegal degree a little bit if it is from an institution that does have a well-respected and accredited law school.
